Following the arrival of European missionaries in Kodaikanal during the 1800s, the Kodaikanal Missionary Union was formed in 1890 to support the growing missionary community.
With support from the Union, fundraising initiatives, and land donated by Swedish missionaries, Van Allen Hospital was established under the leadership of Dr. Edward Wheeler Wilder and Dr. Chester Van Allen. The hospital officially opened in 1913 and was named in honour of Dr. Van Allen.
A second wing was added in 1923, and over the years the hospital expanded its services to residents, visitors, and nearby villages. Administrative responsibility later transitioned from the Kodaikanal Missionary Union to the CORSOCK committee in 1976.
